Project 03 · Water & health

Water at the School Gate

Boreholes, hand-washing stations and health outreach, so no child walks kilometres before class.

Partially funded2026 budget · $20,000Bulopa, Kamuli District
Children carrying yellow jerrycans of water beside a brick wall.
Fetching water before school

The problem

The school day begins with a walk for water.

Children come to school after fetching water. The walk is seven to nine kilometres. The water is carried in jerrycans; the youngest children carry the smallest containers.

The first borehole is working. A second is needed for the growing school and the surrounding households, and hand-washing has to be kept supplied.

What this project funds

Borehole 2 and the things around it.

2026 quotations in US dollars. Every line is tied to a purchase the school can receipt.

How we will verify it

What a donor can ask to see.

Verification is a habit of keeping paper, not a paragraph in a proposal.

  1. The drilling log and water-quality test. Depth, yield and a test showing the water is safe to drink.
  2. Dated photographs of the works. The pump, apron, drainage and hand-washing station.
  3. Pump committee records. Who is trained, who holds the key and how repairs are reported.
  4. Receipts and the contractor's handover note. Kept at the school and shared with the funder.

Timeline

From the first class to 2026.

Dates are recorded where they matter. The next phase is not dated until it is funded.

2023

Borehole 1

The first borehole is drilled and handed to a trained committee.

2024

Hand-washing

Stations are built outside the latrines and kitchen.

2026

Borehole 2

A second borehole is needed; the quotation is signed and waiting for a funder.

Sustainability

What happens when the grant ends?

A pump that is not maintained is a pump that stops. The budget includes the training and the spare-parts fund that keep it working.

The school management committee nominates a small pump committee, including at least one teacher and one parent. The committee keeps the tools and calls the contractor for anything beyond a minor repair.

Fund this project

Put the water inside the gate.

We are seeking a funder for the second borehole, and smaller gifts toward hand-washing and the spare-parts fund. Two boreholes cost $10,000 when the sites are drilled together.
