Stay in School

Classrooms, teacher salaries, books, pencils, shoes and school lunches — the 2026 budget for more than 1,160 children.

The problem

A free school still has to pay for the things that make school possible.

In 2026, more than 1,160 children are on the school register, and 320 new pupils arrive every year. Some classes still meet under trees or double up on benches.

The school cannot charge fees. The basics have to come from somewhere else: a teacher's salary, books, pencils, shoes, a classroom and a daily lunch.

What this project funds

Teacher salaries and the things around it.

2026 quotations in US dollars. Every line is tied to a purchase the school can receipt.

Classroom construction
Four more classrooms for the children still learning under trees.$6,000 per classroom
School lunches
A lunch programme for children who would otherwise learn hungry.$10,000 per programme
Books and pencils

How we will verify it

What a donor can ask to see.

Verification is a habit of keeping paper, not a paragraph in a proposal.

  1. Payroll and teacher attendance records. Signed by the head teacher and available to the committee.
  2. Dated photographs of completed classrooms. Before and after, with the date recorded.
  3. The enrolment and attendance register. Showing how many children are actually in class.
  4. Receipts and the annual account. Shared with the German friends' association.

Timeline

From the first class to 2026.

Dates are recorded where they matter. The next phase is not dated until it is funded.

2016

The first class

Betty and Francis Tibagye open a free school under a mango tree.

2018

The first permanent block

A sponsored run funds the first classroom block, seating and blackboards.

2026

1,160+ children

Four more classrooms are needed; teacher salaries and lunches remain underfunded.

Sustainability

What happens when the grant ends?

Teacher salaries are the recurring cost that never goes away. A monthly gift can pay a teacher every month; a capital gift can build a classroom that lasts.

The long-term answer is a school that is partly self-financing, but the classroom will always need an adult in front of it.
